Gunnera insignis is commonly known as Poor Man’s Parasol, Poor Man’s Umbrella, ‘Sombrilla de pobre’, and Giant Rhubarb. The stem of a Giant Rhubarb can be up to 30cm in length. The Giant Rhubarb has large, rough, heart-shaped leaves, that are between 1 and 2 metres in diameter. At the base of the leaves, you can see red scales. The flowerhead of a Giant Rhubarb is triangular and can grow up to one metre with many small branches, and small flowers on each branch. The fruits bear one seed each. The leaves, stem and seeds
can be poisonous if ingested.
